When it comes to research and development ("R&D") tax credits, retail may not be the first industry to come to mind.  However, retailers often make investments eligible for significant R&D tax credits. In fact, according to the most recent IRS statistics the average federal R&D credit reported by Retail and Wholesale companies in 2012 is approximately $718,000.  Many companies increase that number considerably, tacking on the "double dip" opportunities afforded by more than 40 states in the U.S.  In addition, there has never been a better time to claim R&D tax credits for expenses related to software systems developed for supply chain management, customer interface or to be used "in-house."  By maximizing these opportunities, retailers can generate sizeable tax savings, including generating cash today for their past and future investments.
