David FriendDavid Friend, M.D., MBA | Managing Director and Chief Transformation Officer
Dr. David Friend is the Chief Transformation Officer and Managing Director of BDO’s Center for Healthcare Excellence & Innovation. He has more than 35 years of global healthcare experience serving as a C-Suite Operating Executive, Board Director and Advisor to Academic Medical Centers, Employers, Payors, Hospitals, Physician Groups, REITS, Law Firms, and Post-Acute Care Organizations. He provides advice on mergers and acquisitions, strategy, clinical integration, physician engagement, and enhancing shareholder value. Prior to joining BDO, Dr. Friend was the Chief Clinical Officer of Golden Living, a $2.5 B post-acute healthcare provider, where he was responsible for the care of 20 million patients annually provided by over 42,000 employees. Previously, he was the President and Chief Medical Officer of Aseracare Hospice and Homecare, a Managing Director in Healthcare at Alvarez & Marsal, and a Senior Partner, Board Member and Global Leader of the Healthcare practice at Willis Towers Watson. Dr. Friend was also appointed by the Governor of the State of Connecticut to be a Founding Board Member of The University of Connecticut Health Center where served on the Board of the Teaching Hospital, Medical School and Dental School. Dr. Friend holds a M.B.A. from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a M.D. from The University of Connecticut.

 

Karen Meador - BDO Healthcare

Karen Meador, M.D., MBA | Managing Director
Dr. Karen Meador is a Managing Director in BDO Consulting, LLC, and part of the firm’s Healthcare Advisory practice and The BDO Center for Healthcare Excellence & Innovation. She is experienced in providing innovative programs and services designed to transform clinical care, research and education in the ambulatory and outpatient, emergency and inpatient settings. As a physician executive at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, she served in clinical and administrative leadership roles across the spectrum of healthcare delivery. Dr. Meador was president of two subsidiary corporations, where she expanded an outpatient primary care network, founded a physician staffing company, launched an urgent care center, developed the business plan and created a hospitalist program to expand an academic pediatric hospital and launch a new community hospital. As vice president of Research Administration, she led an NIH-funded pharmacology research unit and was responsible for the contracting, administration, and compliance of over 600 ongoing clinical trials. Dr. Meador also served as an emergency medicine and urgent care pediatrician at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Meador holds a M.B.A. from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a M.D. from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.


Patrick Pilch - BDO HealthcarePatrick Pilch, CPA, MBA | Managing Director & National Healthcare Advisory Leader 
Patrick D. Pilch is a managing director in BDO Consulting, LLC, with more than 25 years of healthcare, financial services, operational management, and restructuring experience. Patrick provides strategy, business transformation, interim management, M&A advisory, restructuring, turnaround, and performance improvement services to assist organizations and their stakeholders. Advising nonprofit, for-profit and public healthcare organizations on strategic, turnaround and performance improvement pursuits, he conducts operational and financial assessments, develops future state models and roadmaps, and implements alignment strategies across the continuum of care to improve quality and delivery. He has served as a strategic advisor to hospitals, boards, foundations, and healthcare systems in matters involving mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, real estate holdings, and other assets and restructurings. Patrick holds a M.B.A. from Columbia School of Business and a B.S. in Accounting from Fairfield University.

Steven Shill’s experience spans 25 years in public accounting including five years in a senior management role with a publicly traded corporation overseas. Steven’s clients included public and privately held and nonprofit companies in the healthcare provider, payer and insurance sectors. Steven’s assurance clients include hospitals, health plans, specialty and primary care physician groups, surgery centers, urgent care centers and various managed care organizations. In addition to providing assurance services, Steven has performed examinations of feasibility studies for bond offerings of in excess of $750 million related to new or replacement hospital developments nationwide including the examination of the feasibility study for the “The Bond Buyer Deal of the Year in 2005.” Steven has experience performing due diligence and assurance procedures for merger acquisition activities, including for one of the largest hospital acquisitions in the U.S. in 2003. Steven is Yellow Book certified to provide audit opinions on Single Audit and OMB A-133 engagements. Steven has also been published by the Turnaround Management Association’s (a global organization focused on restructuring) periodical called the Journal for Corporate Renewal, where his article Re-engineering the Turnaround Process for Healthcare Organizations was featured as the headline article. Steven also represents BDO USA on BDO International’s Public Sector practice as a steering committee member, which is comprised of the healthcare, education, social welfare and local and central government practices for BDO offices operating in the Europe as well as further afield including the Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Oceana. Steven obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and continued his tertiary education with an Honors Degree in Accounting Science at the University of South Africa in Pretoria. In addition to being a registered CPA, Steven also is a Chartered Accountant.


Venson Wallin - BDO HealthcareVenson Wallin, CPA | Managing Director and National Healthcare Compliance & Regulatory Leader
Venson Wallin is a managing director in BDO Consulting, LLC, and a member of The BDO Center for Healthcare Excellence & Innovation. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, serving hospitals and health systems, continuing care retirement communities, nursing homes, academic medical centers, and physician groups. He works with healthcare organizations on enhancements to their financial and operational systems, as well as providing assurance on financial statements and internal controls in accordance with regulatory requirements. Venson has advised healthcare entities on a wide range of issues including federal and state compliance, project management, Affordable Care Act impact modeling and education, ICD-10 implementation, debt capacity and feasibility studies, service line assessments, government reimbursement, and charge master pricing. Additionally, he has managed teams through audits, bond financings, due diligence projects, and the adoption of new regulatory accounting pronouncements. Venson holds a B.B.A. in Accounting from the College of William and Mary and is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).
