Evolving CUI & ITAR Compliance: What Unanet Users Need to Know
The regulatory environment for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) is shifting rapidly, with new mandates and deadlines impacting government contractors and related industries. The upcoming transition to NIST SP 800-171 Revision 3 and increased enforcement of FedRAMP Moderate baselines are driving organizations to rethink their approach to data governance and ERP system configuration.
Key Insight
Many organizations underestimate the complexity of mapping and segregating CUI/ITAR data within interconnected ERP environments. Recent audits and enforcement actions have revealed that data sprawl—where sensitive information unintentionally proliferates across systems and users—remains a top risk. This is compounded by the need to restrict administrative and support access to U.S. persons and ensure all hosting arrangements meet strict data sovereignty requirements.
Another emerging trend is the need for parallel compliance strategies: maintaining readiness for both current and future NIST revisions, while simultaneously preparing for phased rollouts of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). Organizations that proactively update their system security plans (SSPs), conduct regular vendor due diligence, and implement robust training for staff and subcontractors are best positioned to avoid costly compliance gaps and export control violations.

Stay up to date with the latest features by visiting the Unanet New Features & Functions section in the Unanet Experience Center! Over the past quarter, Unanet has introduced new roles, including Invoice Setup Admin, Items Admin, and HR Manager. For AIM users, a new mobile app is now available!
Several standard reports—such as the Statement of Indirect Rates, User Time Details, User Time Summary, People Schedule Details, User Schedule Details, Project Accounting (Other Direct Costs Details), and Labor Cost Details—can now be exported to .csv format. Additionally, Data Import and Export Users have been granted expanded access.
