Executive Summary

Tom Smith has over 20 years of experience specializing in state and local taxation. He grew up on a ranch in Eastern Oklahoma, and focused on the oil and gas industry for many years. In the late 1990s, he worked in Nashville and Atlanta where serving clients in the healthcare industry, many of which he still serves today.
Tom began his career began as an auditor for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, and later transitioned into public accounting, spending nearly 15 years working for large public accounting firms. He joined Coopers & Lybrand as a senior in 1996, and after its merger with PriceWaterhouse, he moved onto a regional position with Ernst & Young, working in Memphis, Nashville and Atlanta. Tom was then moved to KPMG, where he remained from 2001 through 2010, leading the indirect tax practice in Dallas during his last two years with the firm. Tom joined HoganTaylor in 2010, and from that point until June of 2014 built a practice of more than 10 professionals. Tom joined BDO in July of 2014 as a Partner and Leader of the Southwest region’s state and local tax (SALT) practice. Tom also brought most of his team with him from HoganTaylor.
