A common concern I hear is that governance will slow teams down. Often, the opposite happens. When organizations put structure around how AI is reviewed and deployed, it reduces uncertainty. Teams know the process, understand expectations, and can move forward with more confidence. It can also build trust with clinicians and, over time, with patients. The organizations that struggle most are usually the ones trying to retrofit governance after AI is already widespread, which is a much harder path.
Leadership Sets the Tone
This can’t be delegated entirely to IT or data science teams. Executive leadership and boards need to be involved, not in the technical details, but in setting priorities and expectations. Defining the problem is key. I like to call it falling in love with the problem. Don’t chase the newest tools. Ask: What problem are we trying to solve with AI? Where are we willing to take risks, and where are we not? How will we measure success? Those leadership questions shape what comes next, and they influence the value the organization may get from its AI investments.

AI use is continuing to expand across healthcare, and with that comes more attention from regulators and more scrutiny from patients and clinicians.
