Steve has nearly 36 years of experience in state & local taxation, including 28 years in public accounting. His extensive experience includes a variety of industries such as Construction, Utilities, Oil & Gas Energy, Chemicals, Aviation, Manufacturing, Transportation, and Technology related to sales & use tax and excise taxation.

Steve leads the firm’s National Excise Tax Practice and he has extensive experience with a variety of Excise Taxes including motor fuel, alcohol, tobacco and tobacco paper, E-Cigarette and Vaping, Archery and Fishing, Firearms and Ammunition, Ozone Depleting Chemicals, Superfund Chemical Excise Tax, Superfund Financing Rate on Crude and Petroleum Products, Alternative Fuels and Renewables, Retail Excise Tax on Heavy Trucks and Trailers, Taxable Tires, Foreign Insurance Premiums and PCORI Fees. Steve has worked with various governmental agencies including IRS, TTB, CBP and various State & Local jurisdictions. His extensive experience with excise and multistate state & local tax includes controversy, risk mitigation and audits, mergers & acquisitions, complex aircraft buy/sell/leasing transactions and air transportation excise tax, refund recovery and utility reviews, multistate compliance, tax matrixes, tax manuals, training, nexus studies, due diligence reviews, motor fuel & excise tax consulting, compliance, credits, refunds and audit assistance and serving as subject matter expert (SME) with excise and sale & use tax in conjunction with the implementation of third party software solutions.

Steve is a Certified Public Accountant and Attorney licensed in the state of Michigan. He has served as speaker on multistate sales & use tax and excise tax topics for a variety of organizations including the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) and the Michigan Tax Conference, the Ohio Tax Conference, Walsh College Tax Symposium, COST, TEI and the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT).
