Together with our children & youth cause partner Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), BDO is committed to helping the next generation grow with confidence through the power of mentorship. Throughout the year our professionals participate in “Big for a Day” events with BBBSA, meeting with local students to provide career coaching and advice that help guide them on their journey toward realizing their full potential.
Across the firm, BDO professionals also volunteer as full-time mentors, known as "Bigs." BDO’s Bigs are helping young people discover their potential while gaining valuable perspectives themselves. While each mentoring experience is unique, their stories share a common theme: making a difference starts with showing up.
For Document Quality Specialist Alicia Brown, becoming a Big was years in the making. After learning about the organization more than a decade ago, Alicia decided it was time to get involved when BBBSA was selected as BDO's cause partner.
Reflecting on her experience, Alicia says one of the most rewarding parts of spending time with her Little has been, "Watching her grow into the person she's meant to be. When we first met, she would speak with the shyest of tones. Now she does so with some confidence. She’s always been kind but now she looks for small ways to brighten someone’s day.”
Alicia has also learned an important lesson through the relationship: “My Little Sister has subtly taught me the power of simplicity. Her favorite outing wasn’t one of the grander things we’ve done — it was going to the nursery to pick out plants and then grabbing an ice cream.”
Administrative Assistant Melissa Carlson was inspired to become a Big because she felt she could dedicate her time and make a lasting impact. Her mentoring relationship was later recognized as Southwest Michigan Match of the Year and among the Top 3 Matches in the nation.
Looking back, Melissa says, "Knowing that I played a role in her journey is one of the greatest rewards of being a Big Sister."
The experience has also had a major personal impact. "Being a Big Sister has been incredibly rewarding. It has given me a sense of purpose and reinforced the idea that even small acts, like consistently showing up, can make a positive difference in a child's life,” says Melissa.
For Assurance Principal Shawn Harrigan, becoming a Big was inspired by his belief that every child deserves encouragement and support.
"It has given me a deeper sense of purpose and perspective. It reinforces that showing up, listening, and being present can truly make a lasting difference," says Shawn.
He also credits the relationship with teaching him an important lesson, "Small acts of consistency, kindness and patience can make a huge difference in a young person's life."
