AI Race Intelligence for High-Speed Decisions

SUMMARY/OVERVIEW

How PitlaneIQ™ Transforms Data Into Insights for ARCH Racing

In motor racing, the margins of success are measured by tenths and hundredths of a second. Flying around the track at speeds that can exceed 150 mph, riders in the MotoAmerica Super Hooligan series need to make split-second decisions to get the most out of their bikes. But the need for lightning-quick reaction times isn’t just about what happens on the track. With a limited amount of time between sessions, team members in the paddock need to react to a sea of data and make rapid adjustments to each bike’s setup before the next run begins.

Now in their second season, the ARCH Racing team was looking get more out of their telemetry to enhance performance, improve reliability, and adapt to ever-changing track conditions. That’s when they turned to BDO and PitlaneIQ™, our AI-powered race intelligence platform to help turn data into action.

Key Takeaways

Improved track performance and enhanced insights through PitlaneIQ’s analysis and generative briefs.

Advanced anomaly detection to promote predictive maintenance and enhance vehicle reliability.

More confident decision-making between races.

The Challenge

Built for the Moments Data Outpaces Time

ARCH Racing faced a challenge common across motor racing. On-track sessions produced more data than team members could analyze and react to before they had to get their bikes back on track for their next runs. With as little as an hour to adjust each vehicle’s setup during events, the ARCH team needed a way to analyze as much of their telemetry as possible and gain actionable insights from it. That included identifying anomalies and discovering opportunities for performance enhancement with each bikes.

Additionally, the quick turnaround times and volume of data created the risk that important insights could remain undiscovered. The team also needed a reliable, auditable source of information they could refer back to. Different team members have their own priorities based on their roles, meaning that specific metrics can hold greater relevance to one person that may not matter as much to another. That also has an effect on communication, with riders, technicians, and engineers needing to pass information to one another to pinpoint what changes they need to make before the next track session begins.

The Approach

Accelerating Performance With PitlaneIQ

To address ARCH Racing’s needs, our knowledgeable team of AI professionals developed PitlaneIQ. A dedicated race intelligence platform, PitlaneIQ ingests telemetry, sensor feeds, and rider debriefs, analyzes them to produce meaningful insights, and generates a brief with action-ready items for the team. This includes the ability to see a side-by-side comparison of two different setups for each bike, with data broken down by lap time and track sector to more easily identify where they can improve performance.

We also built natural language processing (NLP) into PitlaneIQ, allowing riders to speak directly to the AI after each session as part of their debriefs. Having riders speak directly to the AI helps the team capture all of the riders’ input, reducing the risk that key information may slip by during the frenetic pace of a race weekend. Riders can also ask PitlaneIQ questions about each session and get immediate feedback about their laps and setups.

  • To enhance reliability, the platform’s sensor and trend analysis provides AI-assisted risk scoring and anomaly detection in critical systems so the team can prioritize areas for preventive maintenance. And just like the riders can speak directly to the platform, team members in the garage can leverage PitlaneIQ as a race engineering assistant to help them identify the root causes of anomalies to keep bikes performing in peak condition. At the end of each race, the platform delivers an auto-generated briefing that the team can review in time for their post-race owner’s call.

  • To help streamline operations, PitlaneIQ features role-based access that gives each member of the team the information they need at a glance. And the tool works with various data-logging technology, helping it to fit into existing workflows without disruption. PitlaneIQ was also developed with enterprise-grade security and in compliance motorsport regulations and is customizable to fit the team’s evolving strategy and goals.

The Results

Enhancing Performance on and off the Track

PitlaneIQ’s full suite of capabilities and our knowledgeable team have helped ARCH Racing uncover findings in their data that they hadn’t previously examined, leading to performance improvements both on the track and in race preparation. Additionally, the ARCH racing team has provided valuable feedback to help us customize the tool to meet their needs and examine areas of importance more closely.

As the team has continued gathering insights and data, they’ve also gained faster, clearer insights, which has improved reliability and uncovered performance on track and enhanced operations in the paddock.

BDO helps us use our data to make our motorcycle more reliable and our riders faster.
