U.S. Government Ramps Up Enforcement of Forced Labor Law

Recording

The U.S. Senate Finance Committee recently queried eight major automakers in the U.S. regarding the use of forced labor in their supply chains. This query was prompted by the increased enforcement by U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) that become law in June of 2022. Given the significant use of semiconductor chips in the assembly of finished vehicles, this law focuses on the use of forced laborers in the Xinjiang region of China, where half of the world’s supply of polysilicon, the building block of chips, resides. As evidenced by this query, companies will need to be increasingly focused on ensuring proper documentation indicating their merchandise is free of forced labor. Failure to do so will result in the merchandise being denied entry into the U.S.

Join us for a webinar moderated by Jenna Aira-Ventrella (BDO Automotive Industry Leader) and featuring Damon V. Pike, where we will discuss how to navigate this complex law, its implications and ways to ensure your company is prepared.  Damon leads BDO’s Customs and International Trade Services (CITS) group and has nearly 34 years of experience helping multinational companies navigate the complex rules governing the cross-border movement of goods and services.

Following this webcast, you will be able to:

  • Describe the latest topics surrounding the UFLPA
  • Explain the required documentation needs to be prepared to "prove the negative" that any goods targeted by CBP are indeed free of forced labor
  • Describe how our team is assisting with supply chain mapping and performing forced labor assessments/origin verifications.
