Thomas Cooper is a managing director in the firm’s Greater Washington, D.C. office with more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry providing audit, accounting, and business advisory services. Thomas has provided accounting and advisory services to banks, bank holding companies, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Housing Finance Agency, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Office of Mortgage Settlement Oversight, insurance providers and mortgage lenders.

Leading financial statement, compliance, and internal audits for mortgage, savings banks, and alternative funding companies, Thomas is experienced in providing risk assessments, allowance for loan losses, servicing, trust reporting, loan sales and securitizations, troubled debt restructuring, loan origination, hedge effectiveness, and the valuing of mortgage servicing rights. He has extensive experience reviewing the aging of loan portfolios for a myriad of loan types including mortgage loans, student loans, and alternative funding sources.

Thomas assists clients with compliance audits, loan file reviews, loan valuation and servicing, fair value measurement standards, allowance for loan loss calculations, risk based assessments, and loan servicing controls. He is also well-versed on integrating large mortgage portfolio purchases, including trust reporting, and implementing credit card rules.

Prior to joining BDO, Thomas served as a technical expert in the areas of loan accounting, mortgage companies, fair market value, and investments for a Big Four accounting firm. He has been an internal audit executive at Fannie Mae responsible for the accounting, capital markets, financial model validation, and various risk groups including sitting as a non-voting member of the risk oversight committee. In addition, he has held an officer level position at Sallie Mae where he was in charge of the loan reporting and analysis group charged with overseeing the allowance for loan loss, analysis of the loan servicing operations and net operating income calculations.
