Patrick Pilch, National Leader of BDO’s Healthcare Advisory practice notes that “Dr. Bithoney’s industry experience is anchored firmly in academia, clinical excellence and practice, having conducted award-winning and groundbreaking work with accountable care organizations (ACOs).”
After completing his bachelor’s degree at Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude, and receiving his medical degree and postgraduate training at Yale University, Dr. Bithoney went on to work for nearly 20 years at Harvard Medical School, Boston Children’s Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. During that time, Dr. Bithoney served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of General Pediatrics and Primary Care at Harvard Medical School. He was also named Senior Associate in Medicine, the highest clinical appointment available at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Bithoney has also served as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for a number of large health systems with revenues between $1 billion and $2.5 billion per annum. While in these roles, he was appointed Professor at the State University of New York (SUNY) and Professor and Vice Dean of New York Medical College where he was responsible for supervising the care provided by more than 4,000 physicians and professors, as well as administering a $137 million per annum graduate medical education (GME) budget and a $120 million per annum health maintenance organization (HMO).
Dr. Bithoney's experience also includes specializing in efficient clinical and hospital management, as well as in the development of ACOs. He has also developed managed care and academic strategies, managed a Medicare Advantage ACO, and developed self-sustaining models for performance and quality improvement, utilization review, utilization management and research strategies. In addition, Dr. Bithoney co-founded MediVector Pharmaceuticals, a successful contract research company that develops new drug therapies and medical devices.
“We are pleased to have healthcare industry thought leader and innovator Dr. Bithoney join the firm,” said Wayne Berson, CEO of BDO USA. “Dr. Bithoney’s outstanding achievements in healthcare delivery support BDO's model for delivering exemplary service that helps our clients meet their needs.”
“Dr. Bithoney has an exceptional record of professional success in executive roles at some of our nation’s top academic institutions and hospitals,” said Carl W. Dr. Bithoney has earned specific accolades for his ACO work at Sisters of Providence Health System (SPHS) in Massachusetts, serving as the Interim President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), as well as Chief Operating Officer (COO) & CMO. After successfully transforming the system’s ACO efforts in 2008, Dr. Bithoney and his team turned SPHS into the most profitable community hospital in Massachusetts, despite it being located in an extremely impoverished area. In 2010, Dr. Bithoney and his team won the Innovation Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives for their SPHS ACO work.
