Chicago, IL - BDO USA, LLP, one of the nation’s leading accounting and consulting firms, today announced that Julie Valpey, a Partner in the firm's National SEC practice, has been recognized by Working Mother magazine as a 2014 Working Mother of the Year. Julie was cited for her success in balancing career and family, and for her leadership in promoting work+life fit at the firm.

Ms. Valpey was recognized by Working Mother as an involved mother who succeeds at work and home by taking advantage of BDO's flexible work culture. In 2001, in order to care for her aging mother, Julie relocated from Washington, DC, to a home office in Rochester, NY, becoming one of the firm's first 100 percent teleworkers. This arrangement has also been a key component in providing Julie the flexibility to adopt and raise four children with her husband, while maintaining a successful career at BDO, eventually being promoted to partner in 2010.

“All of us at BDO USA want to congratulate Julie on receiving this well-deserved honor,” said Wayne Berson, CEO of BDO USA. “This award and BDO’s continued recognition as a Working Mother Best Company demonstrate our firm’s commitment to championing work+life fit and diversity. Everyone at BDO that has been involved in the Flex strategy and other employee initiatives should feel great pride in the recognition Julie has received.”

Julie Valpey is a Partner in BDO USA's National SEC Department. She has more than 25 years of experience with accounting, financial reporting, auditing and business management. She works extensively with BDO’s clients and engagement teams to prepare SEC filings and resolve related accounting, reporting and SEC compliance issues. In addition, she does technical writing and research for the firm and co-authors the AICPA’s Guide to SEC Reporting and Annual Public Company Update: SEC, PCAOB, and AICPA Developments.

Prior to joining BDO, Julie worked in the public sector as Assistant to the Controller for Teligent, Inc., helping the company with its initial public offering and external financial reporting as well as working on acquisitions and mergers. Additionally, Julie served as Finance Director at Gannett Co., Inc., where she led the financial reporting department in the areas of consolidation accounting, SEC reporting and mergers and acquisitions.
