The day of reckoning is almost upon us. On July 14, 2015 Windows Server 2003 support will end. This means that Microsoft will no longer push patches and security updates, and physical and virtualized instances will be vulnerable to security threats. This is a big deal, 37 critical updates were applied in 2013 alone. Furthermore, companies that continue to run Server 2003 will fail standard compliance audits.
In other words, if you are still running Windows Server 2003, you need to migrate or your business might be headed south. Fortunately, there are some very good options and the team at BDO Digital is highly skilled at making these Windows Sever 2003 migrations.
Windows 2003’s successor, Windows Server 2012 offers a wealth of improvements including integrated virtualization, enterprise-class scalability, improved security, and much more. It excels in interoperability with cross platform technologies, and given that many businesses have heterogeneous environments, this is critical. It also gives your users secure access to corporate resources on their own devices (BYOD), and adds new, powerful end-user capabilities such as SSL virtual private networks and DirectAccess.
Given the number of improvements from Windows Server 2003, Microsoft has said that there is a “substantial learning curve” to move directly from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 R2. Thankfully, the BDO Digital migration team has a wealth of experience to this end and can save you time (and headaches) getting there.
Some of you might be considering moving to Windows Server 2008 in the interim. Microsoft highly discourages this approach, as they ended mainstream support in January 2015.
What Can the Cloud Offer?
The time is ripe to transform your datacenter and take advantage of cloud computing.
“According to IDC, 70% of CIOs will embrace a “cloud first” strategy in 2016.”
Businesses are increasingly looking for ways to improve agility and scalability, and with the cloud’s operational model, you only use and pay only for the resources you need. This will save you money on data storage.
Microsoft’s cloud computing platform and infrastructure, Microsoft Azure, is for many, the perfect solution. It’s a powerful tool for both infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (Paas). It lets you provision, deploy, monitor and manage nearly every aspect of your applications and infrastructure. Its hybridization allows you to meld your current on-premises environment with the cloud providing excellent scalability and flexibility for your business.
Think of this as an opportunity. Migrating to a cloud-based service allows you to prepare for the next generation of hybrid cloud computing, not to mention the flexibility, agility and scalability—which alone make the move well worth it.
Before you jump headfirst into the crystal clear waters of Windows Server 2012 R2 and Azure, keep in mind that this migration can be challenging. BDO Digital can work with you to access your current environment and design an on-premises, cloud or hybrid model that best fits your organization’s needs.
