Azure Backup Server: On-Premise and Cloud Backups as a Service

By Aaron Saposnik| May 10, 2016

Many organizations are asking about how to use the cloud for offsite backups so that they can stop using costly and frustrating tapes.  Many of these organizations are often looking for new backup software as well because their current systems are aging out.  While there are many backup solutions available today, it's difficult to find one that doesn't have limitations or require long term contracts with a cloud company.  At the beginning of this year, Microsoft released their updated backup solution, Azure Backup Server, and it can help to cover all of your backup needs without these limitations.

Azure Backup Server

Azure Backup Server is built on System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM). DPM has been an on-premises backup solution for many years and Microsoft was able to leverage the success of that application and expand it to a cloud service.  Azure Server Backup provides all of the benefits of the on-premises application including full VM level backups of Hyper-V and application level backups of SQL, SharePoint, Exchange and Active Directory, in addition to standard file level protection.  For physical servers or VMware, Azure Server Backup also supports Microsoft’s Bare Metal Recovery solution to allow for full OS restore without the need to rebuild the machine from scratch.

Cloud Offsite Backup Protection

Azure Backup Server then takes the experience one step further by taking all of the backups being performed above and easily and seamlessly replicating them into Azure for offsite backups.  If anything ever happens to your on-premises environment, you can connect a new instance of Azure Backup Server to your cloud storage and restore your environment without ever needing to touch a tape.  Each backup can also have an independent cloud retention schedule so that you can customize your cloud protection and on-premises protection to suit your needs.

Pay-as-you-go Service

Unlike other on-premises applications, Azure Backup Server is a pay-as-you-go service.  The service is charged based on the number of systems protected and the amount of cloud storage used, so you pay for just what you need and are not locked into yearly licensing renewals and product purchases.  This service also includes licensing rights for both the on-premises and cloud solutions so that you can perform all of your backups using one centralized system.
