Brad Ellison is an Engagement Manager at BDO Digital. This client facing role allows him to utilize his sales and interpersonal communication skills to build long-term relationships with BDO Digital's customers. His extensive background and former role at BDO Digital as a Senior Network Engineer has allowed him to become the leader of BDO Digital's Microsoft System Center practice.
We sat down with Brad to give those seeking a career in business and technology a glimpse of what it’s like to be an Engagement Manager at BDO Digital.
How did your experience as a network engineer prepare you for the role as an engagement manager?
My background as a Senior Network Engineer has allowed me to take the conversation deeper than most “sales guys”. I can talk about the actual solution design to clients’ IT departments and can speak with business leaders on the productivity and efficiency gains BDO Digital's solutions provide their businesses. I know how our proposed solutions plays with existing technologies and systems which allows me to build value for my customers in that I’m able to take an idea and help mold it into an exact solution.
What qualities make a successful business engagement manager?
First and foremost, a successful engagement manager has a true and deep passion for helping the customer succeed. This means providing exact solutions to specific business challenges. When that happens, everyone in the process is successful and the partnership strengthens.
A successful engagement manager is personable and has strong leadership and organizational skills. Public speaking and the ability to command meetings is also a must.
What’s your favorite part of your job at BDO Digital?
My favorite part is seeing a project come together and having that feeling of accomplishment when the client is completely satisfied and starts to see efficiency gains from the newly implemented solution.
How has BDO Digital enabled your personal and professional career?
There are a lot of people here that I consider true friends. Not only are they fun to go out with, but I’m always learning from them. Professionally, if you are willing to work hard at BDO Digital, the opportunities are endless. One thing leadership does very well is work to create those opportunities that allow the team to mature and grow. They reward you for your willingness to learn and grow your skills.
What are some of your favorite BDO Digital career perks and experiences?
I love the golf outings, the abundance of free food, and the events that our Wellness Committee organizes. BDO Digital looks out for our health while at the same time tempting us with great perks and tasty treats.
What was the most challenging and/or rewarding System Center project you have been a part of?
The most rewarding System Center project I’ve been part of was when we helped a customer go from a situation where they were spending an immense amount of time manually deploying PCs, reacting to infrastructure and applications challenges and haphazardly managing help desk incidents. There was a lack of both a formal process and the tools necessary to automate these tasks.
By helping them deploy SCCM, SCOM, SCSM and Orchestrator, and providing the necessary information, training and tools to allow them to be successful; our customer been able to provide better support to the business and free up their lean and mean IT staff to focus on more value-added initiatives. It was a huge success for our customer which will allow them to reap the benefits of this solution for a long time to come.
