Using Power BI with Jira to Enhance Quality Assurance and Testing

The measure of success for any software development project is not whether bugs and defects are found (issues are unavoidable) but it’s how well these issues are managed and resolved that can separate an adequate solution from an outstanding one.

Over the years, Testing and Quality Assurance have come a long way. Enterprise Testers are now used to standardize product testing and automate the process of capturing test cases and logging the success or failure of them.

Alongside Enterprise Testers, you’re Project Managers and DevOps team are most likely using Jira – or other issue tracking solutions like it. Jira is a useful project management tool that helps teams plan, track, and manage agile software development projects, significantly simplifying the issue tracking process. This takes the place of manually listing out each issue in an email and dealing with a seemingly endless back-and-forth of communications to complete a simple fix.

The Power of Integrated Issue Management and Tracking

While it’s obvious that these tools deliver a great deal of value on their own, their combined impact could be so much greater! The trouble is, Jira and Enterprise Testers don’t natively talk to each other. This means project teams must switch between tools to create, run, and analyze tests effectively. This gap is more than just an annoyance, it means errors can sometimes get overlooked, resolutions can be left unfinished, and a significant amount of time is wasted managing the process rather than focusing on delivering an exceptional product.

In today’s digital age where customers have very little tolerance for glitches and defects, quality testing and assurance are more important than ever. Thus, we felt this gap in communication had to be addressed. So, what did we do? We got these two systems talking, of course!

Getting on the Same Page with Issue Management in Power BI

To help show the full picture, we funneled data from both Jira and Enterprise Tester using a Power BI Dashboard. As a result, project members were able to keep a pulse on the progress by bringing all of their data together and monitoring it through a single pane of glass. Individuals are no longer left wondering:

  • What stories still don’t have test plans created for them?
  • When is the design for these stories expected to be completed?
  • Have all the issues been fixed, and is it time to restart the test?

Having an issue tracking system that connects directly with Enterprise Tester is a key element of issue/resolution alignment and tight coordination between those involved in the project. By integrating data from Jira and Enterprise Tester, we gained a full line of sight between DevOps, Quality Teams, and customer results. The benefits of this system integration are numbered:

  • Improved data quality
  • Better communication and collaboration between teams
  • Increased productivity
  • Better insights into testing progress and timelines
  • Faster and more accurate issue resolutions
  • Happier customers

Testing quality assurance is crucial to any software creation. If you would like to learn more about our process, or if you’re interested in designing your own integrated system through Power BI visualizations, contact us to discuss your unique needs and requirements!
