BDO Professional Profiles

Meet Meagen Jacobs

Assurance Senior Associate, Los Angeles, CA

What’s your favorite part of being an Assurance senior?

Being able to teach staff different audit techniques to help them broaden their knowledge and increase the team’s efficiency.

What are the top two or three things you learned in school that you use all the time now in your professional life?

During school, I learned how to break out of my bubble, develop social skills and work cooperatively on group projects. These skills have greatly helped me during audit engagements, since working in groups is a huge part of my job. Also, it is important to develop a strong professional relationship with clients, since having the ability to relate to the client can help the job progress more smoothly.

What’s your number one tip that students can use to get noticed at on-campus recruiting events?

Be yourself. Don’t be afraid to talk about your interests outside of school and work. It is important to make sure that you are comfortable with the professionals you meet, since you could potentially be working with them.

What made you choose Assurance over Tax?

I chose Assurance over Tax because I like being able to go to different client locations and develop a relationship with them in person. Another thing I like, which employees experience in both Assurance and Tax, is working in big teams. It seems to make work go by faster and it’s nice to know there are other people I can lean on for help.

Tell us about a positive mentoring experience that you’ve had at BDO.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have a couple of great mentors during my time at BDO. I think the best mentoring experience I had was during one of my first engagements. The senior associate really took me under her wing to teach me different audit procedures and was patient enough to ensure that I really understood the purpose of what I was working on. Even after the engagement was over, she continued to check in with me. I knew that if I ever had any questions, I could always go to her for help or advice.
