Internship Program

BDO's internship program is an excellent way for students to jump in and experience the "real life" of a tax or assurance associate in one of our 35 offices nationwide. Our internship program is designed to give interns the same type of work and training as our entry-level associates. As a result, the overall internship experience is designed to be stimulating, challenging, exciting and... fun!

How long do internships last?

Internships that take place during the school year typically last a semester, and summer internships typically last 8-10 weeks.

What type of training and support can I expect?

As an intern at BDO, you will participate in formalized training programs at the office and/or regional level. On-the-job training is also a big part of the internship experience; you will work in a dynamic, engaging environment alongside experienced team members - many of whom were interns at BDO themselves. You will be assigned a "buddy" or a "mentor" who will assist you with any questions you may have and may assign you work. In addition, you will have access to technology and tools to support you throughout your internship.

What kind of work will I do?

Interns are exposed to the same type of work as our entry level tax, assurance and information systems assurance associates. Below are examples of the types of work you may participate in as an intern with BDO.

Assurance Interns

You will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the business by working on various stages of the audit, which may include fieldwork in the areas of compliance testing, cash, accounts receivable, inventories, fixed assets, accounts payable and accruals. Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in performing audits and review engagements
  • Assisting in the preparation of financial statements and applying areas of GAAP
  • Providing input and suggestions to management to improve client internal controls and accounting procedures
  • Maintaining relationships with and speaking to key client personnel to obtain an understanding of business operations, processes and functions
  • Communicating with the clients' customers, creditors, banks and related parties concerning audit issues
  • Documenting work completed by preparing workpapers

Tax Interns

You may assist in preparing tax returns, working side-by-side with more experienced team members who can provide you with direction, coaching and learning opportunities. Typical responsibilities may include:

  • Working with tax software applications to complete simple tax returns for review
  • Assisting with responses to notices from the Internal Revenue Service
  • Maintaining relationships with and speaking to key client personnel to obtain an understanding of business operations, processes and functions
  • Assisting in the projection of year-end filings
  • Performing quarterly estimates and file extensions

Information Systems Assurance Interns

As an intern, you will work in a team providing internal control services and evaluations for BDO's diverse SEC and private client base. Internal control evaluations focus on IT general controls, as well as significant transaction streams. Other duties may include:

  • Reviewing, documenting, evaluating and testing IT internal controls in a wide range of environments
  • Reviewing, documenting, evaluating and testing application controls, particularly manual and automated controls on a wide range of software application packages
  • Working within a team to communicate client control strengths and weaknesses to the financial audit engagement team and clients
  • Participating in the review of internal controls as described in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, as well as SAS 70 reviews, operational audits, compliance audits, security audits and vulnerability assessments

What else can I expect from my BDO internship?

Throughout your internship, you will receive feedback on your performance, which will culminate in a final evaluation at the end of your internship. We also welcome your feedback - on our internship program and anything else you might want to tell us about. You will be invited to participate in firm events, which may include baseball games, parties, networking events and more.
